So many beautiful towns to explore in the Algarve. From coastal fishing towns to historic centres inland, these are the kinds of places that make you want to stay a little longer than planned.
Here are some of the most dreamy towns to visit in the Algarve, each with its own pace, atmosphere, and reason to explore.
Lagos
Lagos is a mix of history, coastline, and everyday life. The old town is full of cobbled streets, small squares, and lively cafés, while just outside the centre you'll find some of the Algarve's most impressive cliffs and beaches. Walk the clifftop paths to Ponta da Piedade or spend an afternoon exploring the old town's hidden corners and local restaurants.

Ferragudo
Perched on the edge of the Arade River, Ferragudo is a tiny fishing village that feels frozen in time. Colourful boats line the water, narrow streets wind up the hillside, and there's a quiet magic to simply sitting by the river with a coffee. Explore the castle ruins overlooking the river, or take a boat trip upriver to discover the quieter side of the Algarve.

Silves
Inland and rich in history, Silves feels like a step back in time. Dominated by its red sandstone castle, the town offers panoramic views, traditional cafés, and a more rural atmosphere. Explore the castle ruins and climb to the top for views across the countryside, or wander the narrow streets and stop for a traditional meal.

Olhão
Raw, real, and full of character, Olhão feels very different from the polished resort towns. Known for its markets and fishing heritage, it's a place where local life takes centre stage. Explore the cubist-style architecture, browse the bustling fish market in the morning, or hop on a boat to the Ria Formosa islands.

Faro
Often overlooked, Faro is well worth your time. The old town is enclosed by ancient walls, with quiet streets, historic buildings, and a calm, local feel. Climb the cathedral tower for panoramic views, or take a boat trip into the Ria Formosa lagoons and islands.

Carvoeiro
Carvoeiro is a small fishing village that hasn't lost its soul. Colourful boats rest on the sand, narrow streets wind through the centre, and there's a genuine, unhurried feel to the place. Swim in the sheltered beach cove, or walk the clifftop trail to nearby beaches and hidden viewpoints.

Tavira
Tavira moves at a gentler rhythm. Set along the Gilão River, it's a town of tiled façades, quiet plazas, and layers of history shaped by Roman, Arab, and Christian influences. Take the ferry out to Ilha de Tavira for a beach day, or simply sit by the river with a coffee and watch the light change.

Alvor
Alvor is small, relaxed, and easy to enjoy. The village centre is full of charm, while the nearby beach and lagoon offer space to breathe. Walk the wooden boardwalk through the dunes for birdwatching, or enjoy a long lunch by the water watching the boats come and go.

We hope you enjoy each and every little corner of these beautiful spots, from the first coffee to the last sunset.
